With the assistance of the Maryland National Guard, the fifth mass vaccination site in the state at the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center in Salisbury, opened on March 18, 2021, to administer COVID-19 vaccinations to residents.
Governor Larry Hogan announced that the Freedom Readiness Center in Sykesville, Maryland, will be officially renamed after retired U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Linda L. Singh, on Oct.16, 2021, at her official portrait unveiling ceremony. Singh, who was the first African American and the first woman to lead the Maryland National Guard as the 29th adjutant general, was surprised by the announcement.
Sgt. Donita Adams, a religious affairs noncommissioned officer, has been in the National Guard since 2015. Originally she was going to be a human resources specialist, but her recruiter helped guide her into a slot that combined her desire to serve, with her commitment to faith.

May 30, 2009, the drill floor at the Melvin H. Cade Armory was dedicated to 1st Sgt. Lloyd R. Scott, Sr., during a ceremony. Scott enlisted as a private at the end of World War II and was ordered to active duty to serve in Korea with the 231st Transportation Truck Battalion – now the 229th Main Support Battalion. Scott worked at Cade Armory from 1960 until his retirement in 1986 with 41 years and five months of military service.

Soldiers in the Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and Pennsylvania Army National Guard compete against one another for the crown of Region II’s Best Warrior. Day one of this four-day event consisted of an obstacle course, stress shoot, and the warrior task lanes.
During the Maryland National Guard’s 243rd and 244th Engineer Companies’ August 2017 annual training, #CitizenSoldiers complete multiple projects while gaining a new cultural experience at Camp Santiago with the Puerto Rico National Guard. The Maryland National Guard is strengthening the community through partnerships. Recently the MDNG and the Western District of the Baltimore Police Department worked together to reduce gun violence and to help strengthen the community. We produced three anti-gun violence videos. They highlight that guns are not the answer to problems. Gun violence in Baltimore is at record levels. By working together through partnerships, we can strengthen our communities where we live and work.
Freemen were called upon once again to stand between their loved home and war’s desolation. March of the Defenders: Witness the historic 1st Battalion, 175th Infantry Regiment as they march in the footsteps of those who defended Baltimore 200 years ago. They will march in honor of those who marched during the War of 1812 and for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for American freedom.
The adventure, and benefits, of service in the Maryland Army National Guard are told through a variety of voices throughout the Eastern Shore region, including Governor Larry Hogan (speaking from Salisbury) and Army National Guard Captain Jacob Day (Mayor, City of Salisbury), multiple recently-enlisted soldiers from the region, and a prospect in the midst of her enlistment process (Liz Cramer). Footage of multiple Maryland National Guard units from across the state are featured in this dynamic 3-minute documentary, targeting prospective Guardsmen.
Don’t touch the bomb! The U.S. Army European Command’s Humanitarian Mine Action program brought the Estonian Rescue Board and Maryland National Guard Soldiers together to create public service announcements. The purpose of this project is to raise awareness of and educate the public about the unexploded ordnance issue in Estonia.

Instructing: International partnership with Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina, training their public affairs officers on equipment provided under the European Command’s Humanitarian Mine Action program. The training included using digital cameras for photo/video editing and producing communication products to better inform the public on the de-mining operations throughout the nation. The second video, I worked to teach a new photographer to produce a multimedia product.
One of the toughest tests of a warrior’s resolution and training is the Best Warrior Competition. The competition is a multi-day marathon of mental and physical trials, pushing these elite service members to their limits. This year’s competition is conducted at multiple locations throughout Maryland. The competition is open to junior enlisted, noncommissioned officers, and commissioned officers of the Maryland Army and Air National Guard, as well as, soldiers from the Armed Forces of Bosnia-Herzegovina and the Estonian Defence Force.
Members of the Maryland National Guard worked with the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina June 13-17, 2016, to train their public affairs officers on equipment provided under the European Command’s Humanitarian Mine Action program. This combined effort operated in the areas of Prozor, Derventa and Sanski. Much of the training focused on helping AF BiH public affairs officers in how to use digital cameras for photos/videos. The training also included editing and producing communication products to better inform the public on the de-mining operations throughout the nation.
From Sept. 9-12, members of the U.S. Air Force and Army as well as the Maryland and Ohio National Guard, shared tactics, techniques and procedures with members of the AFBiH on public affairs and strategic communication, cargo loading and unloading procedures, and joint terminal attack controller (JTAC) operations.

The Maryland National Guard hosts the Joint E-9 Professional Development Dinner on Oct. 19, 2019, at Camp Fretterd Military Reservation near Reisterstown, Maryland. The keynote speaker for the dinner, Command Sgt. Major John F. Sampa, is the 12th command sergeant major of the Army National Guard. The dinner is an opportunity for enlisted leaders to fellowship with others across the Maryland Army and Air National Guard, the Maryland Defense Force, with state partnering nations, and senior enlisted leaders from neighboring states.

The Maryland Army National Guard broke ground on a $22.6 million project to renovate the Army Aviation Support Facility at Weide Army Airfield, Aberdeen Proving Ground – Edgewood Area, Edgewood Md. May 22, 2010. The project adds 11,500 square feet of renovated space, 20,000 square feet of office space and 65,000 square feet of hangar space.

Vista Park in Kingsville Md. The training centered around extraction in difficult terrain while navigating obstacles. The HART training is performed quarterly, and prepares responders for emergency situations such as hurricanes and floods.

The 32nd Civil Support Team (Weapons of Mass Destruction) participated in EXERCISE Operation Occupy at North Locust Point Marine Terminal in Baltimore, Md., June 26, 2014. Service members of the 32nd CST donned protective gear and collected samples of unknown-potentially-hazardous material for analysis. Chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and high-yield explosives specialists from the Bosnia and Herzegovina armed forces participated in the exercise. This is an example of military-to-military support under the State Partnership Program the Maryland National Guard has with BiH since 2003.
Nearly 200 members of the Maryland Army National Guard’s Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 29th Combat Aviation Brigade deploy from Edgewood Md., on Jan. 29, 2017, to provide full-spectrum aviation capabilities in support of ongoing operations in the Middle East. The unit will serve as the headquarters element for the 29th CAB, which will consist of more than 1,500 soldiers from multiple aviation units spanning more than a dozen states.

The Maryland Army National Guard broke ground Sept. 22, 2010, on a $9.4 million construction project renovating and expanding the CSM Blair Lee Crockett Readiness Center in Salisbury, Md. The project will renovate approximately 26,000 square feet and add an additional 28,000 square feet. Construction is scheduled to begin in December 2010 and go through March 2012.
The Pearl Harbor Memorial Ceremony took place on the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Taney in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor on Dec. 7. The Taney is currently the last remaining vessel afloat that survived the attack on Pearl Harbor 71 years ago.
The Maryland National Guard takes great pleasure in recognizing its citizen soldiers and airmen who stand out in their military and civilian careers. Chief Warrant Officer 4 Tywanda B. Morton, senior property book officer, became the first female and African-American promoted to chief warrant officer 5 in the Maryland Army National Guard. The ceremony took place at the LTC Melvin H. Cade Armory in Baltimore, Md., Nov. 7, 2013. Morton began her Army career at Cade Armory in 1987. Chief warrant officer 5 is the highest rank in the Warrant Officer Corps.

The Baltimore Ravens honored veterans past and present during the home game versus the Cincinnati Bengals Nov. 10, 2013, at M&T Bank Stadium, Baltimore, Md. Soldiers from the deployed 200th and 290th Military Police Companies spoke to the fans via satellite from Afghanistan. Veterans from Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan were invited on to the field. Soldiers had the opportunity to perform their oath of enlistment on the field as well. The Maryland Honor Guard carried the colors for the National Anthem and Soldiers unfurled the flag from Ft. McHenry at halftime.
Warfield Air National Guard Base, Middle River, Md. welcomed 31 Airmen from the 135th Airlift Squadron returning from Afghanistan, March 10, 2010. The 135th supported forces fighting in Afghanistan through transport supplies and cargo. “It’s good to have them home,” said Col. Scott Kelly, commander of the 175th Wing, Maryland Air National Guard. “Portions of our 135th Airlift group are now home. I’m extremely happy for that and I know their Families are also.”

Thirty-eight schools will compete in the two-day competition at Fort Pickett, Va., on October 25.

The Marchanti family and Maryland National Guard leadership were present as the arena recognized the service and sacrifice of Maj. Marchanti. The Jan. 16, 2015, game began with the posting of the colors, the singing of the National Anthem by Sgt. Joey Odoms, and the rappelling of the game ball.
Staff Sgt. Kimberly Kerschner, currently serving as a Maryland Army National Guard recruiter, was selected to tryout for the women’s Armed Forces Soccer Team at the start of the 2015 training camp Sept. 12-30, 2015 at MacDill Air Force Base, Fla. Kerschner was selected to compete for the goalie position against 30 others from across the armed forces.
